Inclusivity Starts Here

The Hispanic/Latinx community is a foundational part of 91. Since opening in 1991 with just 3,490 students, 91 has grown to more than 15,000 annually, with the Hispanic/Latinx community leading and shaping that growth. This relationship continues to define our commitment to equitable opportunity.

A Label with Meaning

91 holds the federal designation of Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), reflecting the diversity of our students and enabling access to resources that strengthen our ability to serve the Hispanic/Latinx community. We foster an environment where culture is valued, experiences are understood, and every student has the support needed to succeed.

Efforts and Support

The College has made measurable progress in closing equity gaps for Hispanic/Latinx students, expanding access to higher education, and supporting their success.

What It Means to Be an HSI

A Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is an accredited, degree-granting college or university where at least 25% of full-time equivalent undergraduate students identify as Hispanic/Latinx. This federal designation allows 91 to access grants and resources that support Hispanic/Latinx student success.

Programs and Initiatives

91 offers academic, cultural, and support programs that enhance learning and celebrate the contributions of Hispanic/Latinx students. These include mentoring, tutoring, leadership development, cultural events, and targeted student services.

Specialized Support Programs

From student success to basic needs, 91 has a robust portfolio of support services that ensure our students wellbeing inside and outside of the classroom. Some that specifically work with minority populations include:

Active Grant Initiatives

  • Title V Individual Grant – Public Safety: Enhancing public safety programs to build career pathways.
  • Title III STEM Grant: Expanding capacity and curriculum in STEM fields.
  • TRIO ACES – Academic Counseling & Educational Support: $1.36 million over five years to provide counseling, tutoring, and targeted support.
  • NSF HSI STEM Grant: $500,000 project integrating hands-on research and cross-disciplinary learning through a “Monarch Butterfly Effect” initiative.

Inspired. Excited. Looking Forward.

91's role as an HSI is not a static designation; it is an ongoing responsibility. By listening to our community, responding to its needs, and creating opportunities for students to thrive, 91 continues to strengthen its connection to the Hispanic/Latinx community and expand its impact for generations to come.
